The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised the Class 8 Social Science chapter on the judiciary following directions issued by the Supreme Court during the controversy over references to judicial corruption in the textbook.
Under the revised edition, sections discussing corruption in the judiciary, judicial backlog, and certain landmark court judgments have been removed. The updated chapter instead places greater emphasis on the functioning of the judiciary, constitutional values, and the role of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) in ensuring access to justice.
The changes come after the Supreme Court expressed serious concerns over the earlier content, observing that references to corruption in the judiciary could undermine public confidence in the institution, particularly among young students. Following the court's observations, the Centre and NCERT initiated a review of the chapter through an expert committee.
The revised chapter aims to provide students with a clearer understanding of the judicial system by focusing on its constitutional responsibilities, citizens' rights, and mechanisms such as PILs that allow individuals and groups to seek justice in matters of public interest.
The updated textbook is expected to be introduced for the current academic session as part of NCERT's revised curriculum.
