Lawyers across Delhi’s district courts have decided to abstain from judicial work in protest against issues concerning jurisdiction and other long-pending demands raised by bar associations.
The decision was taken by the Coordination Committee of All District Court Bar Associations of Delhi, which called for a complete suspension of work on May 14, 2026. The move comes amid allegations that several important concerns affecting advocates and district courts have not received adequate attention from the authorities.
According to reports, the lawyers are demanding a significant enhancement of the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts and greater consultation with bar associations on matters relating to court administration and policy decisions. The protesting advocates have also highlighted concerns regarding professional rights, dignity, and the overall functioning of district courts in Delhi.
The Saket Bar Association extended support to the call for abstention and stated that decisions directly affecting advocates, litigants, and district courts should not be taken without proper consultation with the bar.
The Coordination Committee urged lawyers across all district courts in Delhi to remain united and participate in the protest, asserting that the legal fraternity must collectively safeguard its institutional role and professional independence.
The abstention from work is expected to impact proceedings in several district courts across the national capital, potentially affecting routine hearings and judicial functioning for the day. (Source:sianetnews)
