The Supreme Court has sought responses regarding the proposal for providing 30% reservation to women lawyers in appointments as government law officers, marking another significant step toward improving gender representation in the legal profession. The matter was taken up while the Court was hearing issues related to adequate participation of women advocates in legal institutions and bar bodies across the country.

The Court has previously emphasized the importance of ensuring meaningful representation of women in the legal system and has already issued directions for 30% representation of women advocates in Bar Associations. During the recent proceedings, the Bench noted that greater participation of women in decision-making and public legal positions is necessary to achieve equality within the profession.

The issue concerning reservation for women lawyers as government law officers was raised before the Court, following which notices were issued seeking responses from the concerned authorities. The Court observed that despite the increasing number of women entering the legal profession, their presence in leadership and government-appointed legal positions continues to remain limited.

The proceedings form part of the larger judicial effort aimed at promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities for women advocates at various levels of the legal system. The matter is expected to be heard further after responses are filed by the concerned authorities.(opindia)
